Switchboards
Switchboard upgrades & fuse box replacement
If your home still has ceramic fuses, or a switchboard more than 25 years old, it probably lacks the modern RCD protection that guards against electric shock and fire. UBL Electrical replaces old boards with modern switchboards (circuit breakers plus RCDs/RCBOs), tested and certified by a registered Electrical Engineer.
Modern RCD protection
RCDs cut power in milliseconds on a fault, protection ceramic fuses simply can't provide.
Fewer nuisance trips
Modern breakers and a tidy board make faults easier to find and everyday power more reliable.
Keeps insurance valid
Many insurers expect a modern switchboard; an upgrade helps keep your cover valid.
How it works
A simple, clear process
- 01
On-site check
We inspect your board, meter and circuits, and quote the right upgrade for your home.
- 02
Replace & upgrade
Out with the old fuses; in with breakers and RCDs. Power is off only while we switch over.
- 03
Test & certify
Every circuit is tested and you receive a Certificate of Compliance for the work.
Signs your switchboard needs upgrading
- Ceramic or rewireable fuses (no breakers)
- No RCD safety switches
- Switchboard over 25 years old
- Fuses that blow or breakers that trip often
- Scorching, buzzing or a burning smell at the board
- Adding an EV charger, heat pump or major appliance
Cost & quotes
Indicative NZ ranges: a basic ceramic-fuse-to-modern upgrade is typically about $1,500–$2,500; a larger home with extra circuits can be $2,500–$4,000. General market figures, not a UBL quote, we confirm after an on-site check.

Why do I need to upgrade?
Old boards lack RCD protection and can be a fire and shock risk. A modern board is safer, more reliable and usually expected by insurers.
Will my power be off for long?
Only during the changeover, usually a few hours. We plan it to minimise disruption.
Could a new board reveal other faults?
Sometimes. Sensitive RCDs can detect existing cable faults that old fuses missed, we'll explain anything we find before doing extra work.
