Rewiring
House rewiring for older homes & renovations
Auckland homes built before the 1980s often still run on rubber-insulated (TRS) or cloth-covered wiring that has aged past its safe life. A renovation is the ideal time to rewire, walls are open and access is easy. UBL Electrical removes old wiring and runs new cabling throughout, tested and certified.
Safe, modern wiring
New cabling replaces perished insulation and unearthed circuits, the root cause of many old-home faults.
Capacity for today's loads
Modern circuits handle heat pumps, EV chargers, kitchens and home offices that old wiring never planned for.
Best done during the reno
With walls and floors open, rewiring is faster, tidier and far less disruptive.
How it works
A simple, clear process
- 01
Assess & plan
We inspect the existing wiring, plan circuits around your renovation, and quote the scope.
- 02
Consent (if required)
A full rewire is restricted building work that needs council consent, we handle the application.
- 03
Rewire, test & certify
New cabling is run, every circuit tested (polarity, insulation, earth), and an Electrical Safety Certificate issued.
Signs an older home needs rewiring
- Home 40+ years old and never rewired
- Two-pin (unearthed) power points
- Rubber or cloth-covered cables visible
- Flickering lights or frequent fuse/breaker trips
- Warm or discoloured power points
- A faint burning smell or buzzing from outlets
Cost & quotes
Indicative NZ ranges: a full rewire is typically about $4,000–$10,000+; a small two-bedroom home around $3,000–$6,000, a four-bedroom home around $8,000–$15,000. General market figures, not a UBL quote, every home is different.

Do I have to move out?
Usually not. Power is off for parts of each day, but we keep essential supply where possible and plan around you.
Does a rewire need council consent?
A full rewire does, it's restricted building work. We handle the consent and the final inspection.
Can you do a partial rewire?
Yes. If only certain circuits or areas are a problem, we can rewire those rather than the whole house.
