The kind of work we take on

A look at the electrical jobs UBL Electrical handles across Auckland, from full rewires to EV chargers, switchboard upgrades and tricky fault finding. These are representative of the work we do; photographed case studies of specific jobs are on the way.

Full rewire of a 1950s North Shore home during renovation

An older weatherboard home on the North Shore is being renovated. The walls are open, and the original rubber-insulated (TRS) wiring and two-pin power points are well past their safe life.

The challenge
Perished insulation and unearthed circuits had to be removed entirely, the new layout had to suit a modern kitchen, heat pump and EV charger, and a full rewire is restricted building work that needs council consent.
What we do
We planned the circuits around the renovation, handled the consent, removed the old cabling, and ran new wiring throughout while the walls were open. Every circuit was tested for polarity, insulation and earthing.
The outcome
A safe, modern, fully earthed installation with capacity for today's appliances, signed off with an Electrical Safety Certificate.

Two Tesla Wall Connectors sharing one circuit for a two-EV household

A household with two electric vehicles wants both cars charging at home overnight, without the cost of two separate heavy circuits back to the switchboard.

The challenge
The existing switchboard had limited spare capacity, and running two full-power circuits would have meant a board upgrade. Power-sharing had to be set up so both cars charge safely within the home's supply.
What we do
We installed two Gen 3 Wall Connectors on one dedicated circuit, configured power-sharing and Wi-Fi scheduling, and confirmed the switchboard could carry the shared load.
The outcome
Both EVs charge overnight off one tidy circuit, scheduled for off-peak power, with no switchboard upgrade needed.

Replacing a ceramic-fuse board with modern RCD protection

A home still running on a ceramic-fuse board has no RCD protection, and the owner has been told by their insurer that the switchboard needs to be brought up to date.

The challenge
Old boards can hide existing cable faults that only show up once sensitive RCDs are fitted, so the changeover needs planning to keep disruption and surprises to a minimum.
What we do
We inspected the board, meter and circuits, replaced the fuses with circuit breakers and RCDs/RCBOs, and tested every circuit. Power was off only during the changeover.
The outcome
A modern, tidy switchboard with millisecond RCD protection, a Certificate of Compliance, and a board that keeps the home's insurance valid.

Commercial fit-out

Electrical fit-out for a small commercial tenancy

A café or retail tenancy is being fitted out and needs new power, lighting and equipment circuits laid out around the floor plan before opening.

The challenge
Commercial work has to fit the build programme and other trades, carry the load of commercial equipment, and meet the standards a landlord and council expect.
What we do
We set out the power and lighting circuits to the floor plan, wired equipment and distribution, coordinated with the other trades on site, and tested and certified the installation.
The outcome
A compliant, well-organised installation ready for opening day, with the paperwork the tenant and landlord need.

Tracing an intermittent circuit that kept tripping

A breaker trips every few days for no obvious reason. Resetting it works for a while, but the fault keeps coming back and the household can't tell what's causing it.

The challenge
Intermittent faults are the hardest to find, the cause is often hidden in one fitting, appliance or length of cable, and guesswork just resets the problem instead of fixing it.
What we do
We tested the circuit systematically to isolate the fault, identified the failing point, repaired or replaced it, and confirmed the rest of the circuit was sound.
The outcome
The real cause found and fixed properly, not patched over, with the repair tested and certified where required.

Heat pump circuit and an LED lighting refresh

A family is adding a heat pump for winter and wants to replace tired, uneven lighting with efficient, evenly-lit LEDs at the same time.

The challenge
The heat pump needs its own correctly-sized circuit, and the lighting refresh has to balance brightness, colour temperature and switching across the rooms without disruptive rewiring.
What we do
We ran a dedicated, correctly-protected circuit for the heat pump and replaced the lighting with LEDs, matching colour temperature and switching room by room.
The outcome
A warm home for winter and clean, even, low-running-cost lighting throughout, wired safely and to standard.
