EV charging
Before you install a home EV charger in Auckland
A home charger is the easiest way to keep an EV ready every morning, but a good install is about more than bolting a box to the wall. A little planning up front saves money and avoids surprises. Here is what to think about before you book the job.
Which charger suits your car
Most homes use a 7kW Level 2 charger, which adds far more range per hour than a standard socket. A Tesla owner might choose a Wall Connector; any other EV takes a universal Type 2 charger. Smart units let you schedule off-peak charging and, on some models, lean on your solar. The right choice depends on your car, your daily driving and your home's supply.
Does your switchboard have room
A 7kW charger draws a steady 32 amps, so the switchboard has to have the spare capacity to carry it safely. Older fuse-style boards often need an upgrade first. A registered electrician checks this before quoting, so you know up front whether a board upgrade is part of the picture.
Where it goes and how the cable runs
Most chargers go in the garage or on an exterior wall near where you park. The shorter and tidier the cable run from the switchboard, the cheaper and neater the job. A long run, or one that has to cross the house, adds to both the work and the cost, so it pays to think about placement early.
What it costs
As a general Auckland figure in 2026, a Level 2 home charger plus installation runs about $1,500 to $2,800, on top of the charger unit itself. A long cable run or a switchboard upgrade adds to that. These are market ranges, not a UBL quote; the firm price comes after a quick site check.
Common questions
Can you install a charger I bought myself?
Yes. Supply the unit and we install it, wire it on a compliant dedicated circuit, and commission it for you.
