How much does an electrician cost in Auckland?
“How much will it cost?” is the first thing most people ask, and the honest answer is that it depends on the job. Even so, knowing the typical ranges helps you set a budget and spot a price that looks off. Here is a realistic look at what electrical work tends to cost in Auckland in 2026.
Hourly rates and call-out fees
Most Auckland electricians charge somewhere around $90 to $130 an hour plus GST, with an apprentice billed at a lower rate when a second pair of hands is needed. Many also charge a call-out or first-hour fee that covers travel and the initial diagnosis.
For a small, clearly-defined job an hourly rate is fine. For anything larger, ask for a fixed quote instead. That way it is the electrician's job to scope the work properly, not yours to carry the risk.
Indicative prices for common jobs
The figures below are general Auckland market ranges in 2026, not a UBL quote. Every home is different, and the only accurate number comes after a quick look at the job.
- Switchboard upgrade: about $1,500 to $2,500 for a basic board, $2,500 to $4,000 for a larger home.
- Home EV charger (Level 2) installed: about $1,500 to $2,800, depending on cable run and switchboard.
- Full house rewire: roughly $4,000 to $10,000 and up; a two-bedroom home is often $3,000 to $6,000, a four-bedroom $8,000 to $15,000.
- Repairs and fault finding: usually time plus parts, with an estimate before the work starts.
Why a fixed quote is worth asking for
An hourly estimate can creep, especially when a job turns up surprises behind the walls. A fixed quote forces the conversation up front: what is included, what is not, and what happens if something unexpected shows up. You trade a slightly higher headline number for far fewer nasty shocks at the end.
What makes the price go up or down
Access, the age of the wiring, how far cable has to run, whether the switchboard can take the load, and whether the work needs certification all move the number. A tidy job in an accessible new home costs less than the same work in a 1950s villa with no roof space.
Common questions
Will you give a free quote?
Yes. Tell us about the job, send a few photos, and we will come back with the next steps and a free quote.
Is the cheapest quote the best choice?
Not always. Make sure each quote covers the same scope and that the work is certified. A low price that skips testing or certification can cost more later.
